General Notes (Husband)

He was a farmer at Amenia NY in 1774 and was administrator of his father's estate; served as a 2nd Lt. in Capt. John VanDusen's Co., Dutchess Co. militia in 1775, and 1st Lt. in Capt. Valentine Wheeler's Co. in 1778; in 1786 Luke Woolcot applied for a patent on lands he had settled in the Oblong; this area became part of Dover Twp. in 1807*; he was at Pawling in 1790, with one slave, and at Montgomery Co. NY in 1800 with one young man and a female child living with him. In 1810 he was at Cazenovia NY with one slave, and he was there in 1812. Luke's will dated 1812 mentions his wife Jerusha, children Thomas, Wheeler, and Luke, Thankful Page, Jerusha Wells, and nephew Luke Wolcott Fox, with son Thomas as witness. - Wolcott Family Society
*Note that not the entire Oblong became part of Dover, only that part of it adjacent.

The 1790 Census of Pawling, Dutchess, NY gives him 3 m 16+ [Luke, Thomas, ?], 2 m < 16 [Wheeler + Luke Jr], 4 f [Jerusha (Bailey), Thankful, Jerusha and ?], and 1 slave. It seems logical to assume those unaccounted for were children who predeceased the making of Luke's 1812 will. The 1800 images are badly damaged, but there are entries for 2 Thomas Wolcott's, Wheeler Wolcott and Luke Wolcott in Northampton, Montgomery, NY. - Census 1790 Pawling NY and 1800 Northampton NY

Some accounts give Mary Wheeler as first of three wives, giving the children to her. Other sources give the children to Lydia Conant. Though there is a son, Wheeler, this could possibly be after Valentine Wheeler, who also lived near the Wolcott's. Considering the names of grandchildren Lydia and Martillas Conant, it is likely at minimum that Luke is son of Lydia Conant.

General Notes (Wife)

Lydia may be the Lydia Woolcott, daughter of Abigail nee Tilton named in her aunt's will dated 1808. A stone engraved "Lydia wife of Luke Wolcott" with the rest illegible is in Valley View Cemetery at Dover NY - Wolcott Family Society

It also seems possible, given the name of their first dau, that this could be Lydia, dau of Joseph and Thankful Conant, b 4 May 1750, Stafford, Tolland, CT, provided logical explanation can be found for their paths crossing. [It should be noted that the Agard's and Preston's both migrated from this area of CT originally.] - Stafford CT VR

Calvin PHILLEO and Prudence CRANDALL

Husband Calvin Philleo

Born: 4 Jul 1787 - Pawling, Dutchess, NY, USA
     Christened:
Died: 1874 - Troy Grove, LaSalle, IL, USA
         Buried:

         Father: Enoch Philleo 24
         Mother: Sarah Agard

       Marriage: 1834

Wife Prudence Crandall

Born: 3 Sep 1803 - Hopkinton, Washington, RI, USA
     Christened:
Died: 27 Jan 1890 - Elk Falls, Elk, KS, USA
         Buried:

General Notes (Husband)

Accounts vary as to when and where Calvin and Prudence met. One account says they met at her first trial, and he was most impressed by all the events and drove her home, after which they carried on a relationship by correspondance, he being on his way to Ithica at the time. This could have been misunderstood for Utica, meaning the general area of Russia in Herkimer County, where he had purchased land. I find Milton, Darius and Luther only in Russia in 1830. So far no luck locating Calvin--his ministry may have taken him to Connecticut. I do not find Calvin and Prudence in 1840 either.

So far I find no mention of children, though they seem to have taken in two little McIntyre girls in 1850, one of whom, Mary, shows up as domestic with apparently a young dau of her own in tow, in the 1870 household of Prudence and Calvin's nephew Obadiah Crandall.

General Notes (Wife)

Prudence was an abolitionist and a schoolteacher. Her private school opened in 1832 in Canterbury, CT, was boycotted when she admitted a 20-year old black female student. This was the first integrated classroom in the United States. White parents responded by withdrawing their daughters. The school then became one for "Young ladies and Misses of colour". Black families from other states began sending their daughters. This led Connecticut to pass the "Black Law" which prohibited the education of black children from out of state. Prudence refused, and was briefly jailed in 1832. It was during her trial that she reportedly met Rev Calvin Philleo. Eventually mob violence caused the school to close. Prudence and Calvin married and settled in Illinois, where Calvin Phileo died. Prudence moved with her brother to Elk Falls, Kansas, where she is buried.

Connecticut repealed the Black Law in 1838, and later recognized Prudence Crandall with an act of the state legislature, providing her with a $400 yearly pension in 1886. A Kansas state historical marker recognizes her memory.

Over a hundred years later, legal arguments used by her 1834 trial attorney were submitted to the Supreme Court during their consideration of the historic civil rights case of Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education. - Kansas Historical Society
