General Notes (Wife)

Perry Wolcott and son Sherman A are buried RI Cemetery, Lincklaen, Chenango, NY, near Mariah's parents. Mariah marries 2nd James W Orton. 1880 and 1900 for New Milford, both show James and Mariah; the 1900 includes Lucy and the 1880 shows full name "Nancy Mariah" and lists Morrell B as James Orton's brother-in-law, so this relationship seems clear and straightforward. This 2nd marriage gives meaning to the fact that we do not find Nancy Mariah buried Lincklaen with Perry and Sherman. - Census New Milford CT

Married 32 years per 1900 census, so we would expect to find Mariah with James Orton in 1870. However, James is enumerated with his sister Mary A, and her son Charles in Dover that year, no sign of Mariah. Mary A and James are 2 of 6 children shown with Oliver S and Ruth Orton in 1850 Dover. In 1900 Mary A is widowed sister of James, mother of 1, not living. She is shown always as Orton; it is possible that she was at one time married to one of same surname, or never married. - Census Dover NY and New Milford CT

General Notes (Husband)

confirm DOB/POB/DOD/POD
First marriage s/b by date actually written as Pawling.

He was a farmer and lived at Montgomer Twp. NY in 1800; served in Capt. Goodall's Light Artillery Co. in War of 1812, had a farm on East Mountain in Dover Twp., probably the same land his father farmed, formerly in Pawling Twp.; his widow, Abigail, had military pension for his service and lived at Otselic NY from 1840 to 1850 with her son, Barton Riches. - Wolcott Family Society

Shown in Montgomery 1800 as Thomas Wolcott Jr, Sr being presumably Luke's brother . Luke, Wheeler and Thomas Sr are all found this year in Montgomery living near each other. The census image is badly damaged and only the first three columns are legible. There is only one mark in the m <10 column. Census day that year was Aug 4, signifying that the DOB shown for Martillas Conant of 7 Jan 1800 may be in error. - Census 1800 Montgomery NY

I do not find Thomas in 1810, nor logical reason for migrating Dover to Montgomery, back to Dover and then North again to Chenango County, then returning to Dover. He did fight in the War of 1812. "Martin and Rebecca Preston's son-in-law Thomas Wolcott served in the war and returned to the Mountain." [Here talking about the epidemic of 1813, and we do find a listing on the Muster Rolls of the National Archives for a Thomas Wolcott, Corporal 138 Reg't (Nellis'), New York Militia, possibly the same Thomas.] - Preston Mt

The 1820 Census gives him 1 m 45+ [Thomas], 2 m 16-25 [Martillas and Thomas J], 1 m 10-15 [? Could be either a Richer stepson or a son of Abigail Preston's that we do not know about], 2 m <10 [Burton Richer and either another Richer stepson or a son of Thomas and Abigail Reynolds that d young. Note that David, by all accounts, was not yet born], 1 f 26-44 [Abigail Reynolds, 2nd wife], 1 f 16-25 [Lydia], 1 f <10 [? Either a Richer stepdau or a dau of Thomas and Abigail Reynolds that we do not know about.] Abigail is HOH in 1830 and 1840. - Census 1820 German NY, 1830 Lincklaen NY, 1840 Otselic NY

OTSELIC was formed from German, March 28, 1817. It lies upon the north border of the County, west of the center. Its surface is hilly, and consists of high ridges, from 500 to 800 feet above the valley of Otselie Creek. These ridges are broken by the ravines of the streams. Otselic Creek is the principal stream and flows south-west through the central part of the town. Several small streams are tributaries of the Otselic. The soil upon the hills is a shaly loam and in the valleys alluvium.

Otselic, (p. v.) situated in the north-east part, on Otselic Creek, contains one church, a hotel, a store and about one hundred inhabitants.

South Otselic. (p. v.) in the south-west part, on Otselic Creek, contains two churches, viz., Methodist and Baptist, two hotels, three stores, a grist mill, a saw mill and about two hundred inhabitants.

The settlement of this town was commenced in 1800, by Ebenezer Hill, who located on Section 1, erected a log house and afterwards kept a tavern. David Stodarci came in the next year and located on Section 2. Other early settlers were Reuben Buckingham, William Fish, Jonah Wolcott, William Cross, William Hurlbut and William Smith, all of whom settled in the northern part of the town. In the south part the early settlers were Elias Benjamin, Buell Warner, and his sons, Oliver, Abner and Buell, Jr., Benoni Parce, Lewis Cook, Eneas Thompson, John and James Warner, Abraham Fairchild and William Greene.

Hannah Warner taught the first school. Ebenezer Hill kept the first inn, in 1810, and built the first grist mill, in 1820. George Coles kept the first store, in 1812. James Rush built the first saw mill. The first preacher was Stephen C. Nichols. Rev. Luther Clark was appointed a missionary to labor one-fourth of the time in this place, in 1809, and under the patronage of the Home Missionary Society his labors were continued five years.

In July, 1833, a terrific hurricane passed over the town, sweeping the country from west to east, a distance of one mile in width.

The population of Otseloc in 1865 was 1,468, and its area 23,605 acres.

The number of school districts is, twelve; the number of children of school age, 505; the number attending school, 434; the average attendance, 220, and the amount expended for school purposes during the year was $2,515.69. - Hist of Otselic
